On Dec. 29th, 2017, I challenged myself to “Create a Thing a Day” and post it on social media for 5 days as I transitioned into 2018. See all 5 videos below!
This was brought about by a recent interview I did with Mark Rabideau of 21CM at DePauw University School of Music. We were talking about giving yourself permission to create and how oftentimes classical musicians are taught primarily to recreate rather than to create. This really resonated with me and I realized I wasn’t creating as much as I wanted to. I was too often on autopilot in the land of recreating, especially when in full swing of the hustle and bustle of freelance life.
I came up with this idea to jump start into the New Year inspired and challenged, by making myself spend time creating something of my choice every day. It's been a wild, amazing ride and I've done things I didn't know I could do! At first, I was worried I would run out of ideas, but this process has opened my mind and actually made me think of too many ideas to fit into just 5 days! I've also raided my cabinets and drawers looking for things to make noises, explored adding nonmusical elements and even created an original composition!
I feel renewed as an artist and am super excited to keep this as a priority in my musical life. Maybe not one EVERY day - that was quite an undertaking(!) - but I've been reminded of why I'm a musician and what being an inspired artist means to me.
