On October 29th, we will perform the program, I Hear America Singing:

In this 250th American commemorative year, Aurea joins forces with acclaimed actress, vocalist, and activist, Rose Weaver, celebrating the ever-unfolding ideals of democracy in our newest iteration of I Hear America Singing. The call for a more democratic and inclusive society is as urgent now as ever in our nation’s history. The program draws primarily from the writings of Walt Whitman’s vision for American democracy in the face of the Civil War and the powerful, uplifting words of Langston Hughes. Iconic American songs, string quartets of Florence Price, George Gershwin, Amy Beach, Charles Ives and Jessie Montgomery, merge with Chris Turner’s evocative improvisations to illuminate the emotional landscape of the readings.

Aurea is a string ensemble engaged in a joyous pursuit to investigate and invigorate the harmony of music and the spoken word. Its concerts combine poetry, drama, stories, classical and folk music into performances that sweep from intimate chamber settings to major theatrical venues. The group has performed in Rhode Island and nationwide for more than 20 years.

On October 18th, we will perform the program “New and Dangerous Opinions of Roger Williams”:

As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence taking place next year, “New and Dangerous Opinions of Roger Williams” is set during the founding of Rhode Island, a dramatic political and philosophical time in colonial America. The program shines a light on his contemporary relevance, his ground-breaking revolutionary ideas, and his deeply respectful alliance with the native indigenous inhabitants. The show utilizes Aurea’s signature blending of music and poetry to create a transcendent story that includes English and American hymns, traditional and modern music, and Williams own writings and translations of Narragansett poetry. The string ensemble will perform music by Purcell, Handel, Charles Ives, Barbara Kolb, with readings by Nigel Gore and Chris Turner punctuated by Turner’s exuberant harmonica improvisations.

Divergent Studio, is a 12-day immersive new music experience for students focused on interdisciplinary tools and holistic creative practices for performers and composers of contemporary music. The performance is inspired by Wilfred Owen’s iconic poem, Anthem for Doomed Youth, published posthumously in 1920. Weaving together poems, diary entries, letters to loved ones, and music from the era of The Great War, we trace the tremendous worldwide outpouring of emotional and philosophical response from soldiers, composers, and poets who were so deeply impacted. The poignant and fervent words and music of Owen, Sassoon, Brooke, Thomas, Apollinaire, Debussy, Hindemith, Ives, Stravinsky, Elgar, Britten, Milhaud, Ravel, Bartok and Webern find harmonic resonances with the passionate letters of the soldiers, proof of the universal and profound pathos of the turbulent era.

Aurea Ensemble will premiere The Hour of Clarice: Voicing the Languages of Clarice Lispector with guests Laura Santamaria, soprano & spoken word and Victor Cayres, piano. Inspired by the great poetic and musical resonance of Ukrainian/Brazilian modernist, Clarice Lispector, The Hour of Clarice, is a song cycle for voice and string quartet. Drawn from Lispector’s novels and sung in the original Portuguese, the songs are fused with readings in English translation and music of Bach, Chopin, Ravel, Schumann, Villa Lobos, Marlos Nobre and Chris Turner’s harmonica improvisations.

Discover the captivating arc of transformation in music with Concord Conservatory of Music’s own pianist and speaker, Jackson Carruthers, joined by guest violinist Sarah Whitney. Making this program extra special is an appearance by talented CCM students Henry Ziulkowski and Abigail Kirincich! Together, they will show how a single musical idea evolves and expands, much like our own personal paths from novice learning to expertise. Through discussion and live performances, Jackson vividly illustrates how music transforms in real-time and over the course of time, offering an enriching and relatable experience for all.
